Baptize the Babies!
Catholics are often criticized for believing in infant baptism. “Baptism is only a proclamation of your faith in Christ.” But is that true? Is that what scripture actually teaches?
If baptism were simply a "public declaration of one's belief in Christ" as protestants frequently claim, then the belief that "only adults can be baptized" would be valid.
But that is not how scripture presents baptism.
Baptism is the doorway to the spiritual life by truly uniting us with Christ in his death and resurrection, making us a new creature (2Cor 5:17, Gal 6:15, Rom 6:3-4, Col 2:12, Titus 3:5).
Jesus made it clear that without new birth by water and spirit, no one can enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5, Mark 16:16).
From the beginning of the Church's existence, baptism has been a central and critical part of evangelism and the salvation of souls (Acts 2:38).
It is by baptism that we truly put on Christ (Gal 3:27) because through baptism we are truly saved (1 Peter 3:21) by the application of the grace of Christ on the cross. In baptism, we are washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Christ and by the Spirit (1Cor6:11) and by this washing, we are united to Christ in His one body (1Cor 12:13).
Scripture shows that baptism fulfills the role of circumcision under the new covenant (Col 2:11-12). Just as infants were brought into the old covenant by circumcision by new faith of the parents, so too are infants brought into the new covenant by baptism by the faith of the parents and the Church community.
Scripture makes it clear: baptism is the entry to the spiritual life, to becoming an adopted son of God, a member of the Body of Christ. It is not simply a "public declaration of one's faith." Scripture at no point says that baptism is "only for adults" or "baptism is only a public profession of faith." These are man-made traditions of protestantism.
In fact, it is most appropriate for babies to receive baptism because then it can truly be said of them that they received from God not due to any works of their own (Titus 3:5, Eph 2:8-9); they do nothing on their own, they can only receive. But protestants, by their man-made teaching of adult-only baptism, have made baptism effective based on their own action of first declaring one's faith in Christ.
Scripture makes it clear: baptism is for everyone, babies included.
